Mail call from 7/5/05

July 06, 2005

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out. You must include your town or county of residence.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"This is to the person in Greencastle who said it's ridiculous that you can't go anywhere in public without people smoking. The reason why we are smoking in public is because we can't smoke inside anymore. The only place we can smoke inside is in our home, but I feel that is about to change one day. If you are so worried about smoke in your face, just think about it the next time you get in that car and turn your key. There is more carbon monoxide coming out of that car than any smoke I'm ever going to blow in your face."

"I want to congratulate Brittany for doing a great job at Western Heights this year. We are proud of you. Good luck in high school and be cool. We love you. Love, Mom and Dad."

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling in reference to the article in Mail Call about putting individual names on the plaque at Memorial Boulevard. I don't think they should put any names. I think they should put all who served in the Civil War because in that way you will save space and not have all this stuff going on in the paper."

- Washington County

"Instead of sending two reporters to jail for not turning over their notes to the CIA they should find out from Robert Novak who wrote the original story to name his two White House sources."

- Mercersburg, Pa.

"Impeach President Bush. He is incompetent. His speeches are a carbon copy of all other speeches."

- Williamsport

"I'm calling to ask why when it comes to finding dead bodies in the Washington County limits that the state and the reporters have to bring up their past history of their criminal record. I think it's due to the fact that this man is dead and no one knows why and how he got there. I think the stories should be based on worrying about who did it and or how it happened rather than what kind of history this man has in criminal activity. "

- Hagerstown

"I am calling about the free jazz band concert and celebration for Williamsport on Monday, June 27, that I attended. What a great community outreach and the kids surely excel in instrumental music and manners."

- Williamsport

"I'm sure that most of us who live here in the U.S. would be very surprised to really know how much of our country belongs to China and other foreign countries. It soon will not be called the U.S. of America."

- Hagerstown

"I just want to say thank you to the lady who found my Visa card the other day at Pittman's store. She was wonderful for returning it."

- Hancock

"I'm calling in reference to the person who called in about the cell phone issue being worse than driving under the influence of alcohol. Talking on a cell phone is dangerous, I agree, but I hardly think it's as bad as driving under the influence of alcohol. Check the statistics."

- Hagerstown

"A couple of years ago Antietam National Battlefield promised to do some kind of study to teach us how to deal with the overpopulation of deer in the Sharpsburg area. Several years later all we have is some deer with brightly colored tags in their ears walking around and no word of any type of solution from the battlefield. Why doesn't the government not help the local landowners out in this situation? Farmers and other growers are having a terrible time right now with the explosion of whitetail deer. Deer ticks are everywhere."

- Sharpsburg

"I'm calling to commend the nurses and staff on the sixth floor of Washington County Hospital where I was recently a patient. I was treated very well and with respect and kindness in a very caring manner. I would like to let everybody know that good things still do go on at Washington County Hospital."

"Vice President Dick Cheney, representing George W. Bush, called all the big oil executives together to formulate an energy policy. Shortly after their meeting, the price of gasoline started going up. Did this happen by coincidence?"

- Halfway

"I'm reading here in Mail Call about the schools that have a dress code and they are not obeying them and now it's getting into churches, which is true. I go to a church and Sunday school teachers, who are not teenagers, some of them, and they wear shorts at this time of the year and sandals. I think everyone should dress according to where you are going. If you are going to the beach, then dress for the beach. If you are going shopping, then dress appropriate for shopping and if you are going to church, then dress for church. That is the old-fashioned way and that is the way that people should raise their children because it's getting worse and worse and the clothing is getting skimpier and skimpier."
