Local man hurt in motorcycle crash

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - A Maugansville man was flown to Hershey (Pa.) Medical Center Sunday following a motorcycle accident in Peters Township, Pennsylvania State Police said.

Darryl S. Smoot, 33, address unavailable, was in fair condition Sunday afternoon, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Police said Smoot was riding a Honda CX 500 west on the 14000 block of Buchanan Trail West when he lost control on a curve. The motorcycle went off the north side of the road and struck a guardrail, police said.

Smoot was wearing a helmet, police said.

Discarded cigarette butts blamed for fire

A cigarette believed discarded Saturday night while the occupants were watching fireworks from a third-floor deck has been blamed for a Sunday afternoon fire at 607 W. Washington St., according to Assistant Hagerstown Fire Marshal Richard Miller.

No one was hurt in the fire, which was dispatched at 3:12 p.m. Miller estimated the damage to the decking and the outside wall of the building to be $5,000 to $6,000.

"We got there just in time," Miller said, crediting a quick response by fire personnel for saving the three-story brick apartment building. Someone saw black smoke on the third floor and called 911, he said.

Miller's investigation revealed the occupants of one of the three third-floor apartments had been sitting out on the deck Saturday night watching fireworks. They were discarding cigarettes in a bucket and apparently some missed the bucket. After smoldering, they caught the wood of the wall and decking on fire, Miller said.

He said the occupants of the affected apartment, as well as the rest of the residents of the building, would be able to stay in their apartments, since the damage was outside.
