Fog warning system installed on I-68

July 03, 2005

The State Highway Administration recently activated fog detection and warning systems at roadside weather stations at Big Savage Mountain and Keysers Ridge along Interstate 68 in Allegany County.

The sensors are programmed to generate a signal when visibility drops below 1,000 feet. Warning signs will tell motorists of decreased visibility, according to a release from the highway administration.

The SHA looked for ways to alert drivers to foggy conditions after a multivehicle crash was caused by severe fog on Memorial Day weekend in 2003. Engineers will monitor the $230,000 system over the next few months.
