Police investigate kidnapping report

July 03, 2005

The Washington County Sheriff's Office is investigating the reported kidnapping, robbery and assault of a Hagerstown man, according to a release from the sheriff's office.

The release said John Elwood Mawyer, 32, reported Friday that he had been robbed and stabbed in the east parking lot of Valley Mall when two black males attempted to steal the Jeep Wrangler he was driving.

Sheriff's deputies reported that Mawyer said he had gone into the mall Thursday about 5:45 p.m., leaving the engine running in his girlfriend's Jeep parked in the lot. He said that when he returned to the vehicle, he found a black man sitting in the driver's seat, who displayed a knife. He said he entered the vehicle's passenger side to try to prevent the Jeep from being stolen.

Mawyer reported being held by the two men until Thursday evening, and being forced to withdraw funds from his bank account, to purchase food for them and to rent a room at Motel 6.

The release said Mawyer was treated at Washington County Hospital for superficial wounds to his abdomen.

The sheriff's office learned after his release that Mawyer was wanted on an outstanding District Court warrant for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. The charges were brought against Mawyer by the Jeep's owner, the sheriff's office reported.

The sheriff's office is seeking information on the incident. Anyone with information may call Cpl. Roy Harsh at 240-313-2183.
