Reunions 7/3/05

July 03, 2005

The Boonsboro High School Class of 1945 held its 60th anniversary reunion with a luncheon at the Four Points Sheraton on June 4.

The class has had a reunion every five years since graduation, and since the 50th reunion, it has met for lunch annually. Of the graduating class of 60 members, 27 classmates and one teacher attended, along with spouses and guests.

The class was entertained by singer Colleen Clark and accompanist Debbie Mills providing familiar songs of the school years. Not surprisingly, a number were favorite World War II songs as the Class of '45 was the class that began in 1941 and ended in 1945, the years of the war.

Each graduate or special guest was provided with either a corsage or a boutonniere and a name tag with a ribbon of the class colors to mark this as a special occasion. Classmates attended from as far away as California.

A somber moment of the reunion was the naming and remembrance of the 23 departed class members. A number of items of memorabilia were made available for viewing, including a carved wooden model of a German fighter plane of the kind that the class made for the Air Corps to be used in training American pilots. The classmate providing it admitted that he had it only because it failed to meet the military's rigid specification.

The 69th reunion of the Hagerstown High School Class of 1936 was held at noon on Saturday, June 25, at the Four Points Sheraton. Of the 69 people in attendance, 35 were class members.

John W. Whitmore gave the invocation. After the seated luncheon, a program of music was presented by the Rev. Raymond T. Moreland, Ph.D., executive director of the Maryland Bible Society. His selection of songs was warmly received by the group.

Helen Zentmyer Kreykenbohm gave a tribute to the 210 class members (out of 300) who are deceased, especially the 12 members who died since the last reunion.

Merle Barlup played several patriotic songs and hymns on his magic harmonica. This was followed by a class sing-along led by John Whitmore.

Door prizes were awarded to Virginia Grove Baker, Kathleen Hart, Michele Phillips, John Waggoner and Margaret Grimm.

The benediction was given by Kathryn Mowrer Latimer.

Greeters were Norman H. Holzapfel and Richard Messersmith. The program booklet was given by the family of Max O. Mogensen. Table decorations were arranged by Belle Kretzer Greenfield and Hilda Miller Sprecher. Door prizes were prepared by Helen Keller Kepner and Henrietta Johnson Burns. Name tags and favors were done by Elizabeth Adams Beyard, Mildred Lefevre and Genevieve Wyant.

The 70th reunion will be held at noon on Saturday, June 24, 2006, at the Four Points Sheraton.

On Sunday, June 5, descendants of Harry and Susie Hamby gathered for their 35th annual reunion.

Betty Reeder welcomed the group, followed with a prayer of thanks by Darryl Binkley. A delicious buffet was enjoyed by all.

Door prizes were won by Scott Shank and Steve Ryan. The "Mystery Person," Harold Wolf, was identified by Kathy Jones.

Donated items were won by Holly Smasal, Rose Shank and Ashley Alexander.

Children and adult guessing games were enjoyed by all. Everyone was invited to join in other activities and games, creating a lot of fun for those who participated.

Officers for 2006 are: President Cindy Zang, Vice President Matt Wolf and Secretary/Treasurer Rosalie Shank.

The next reunion will be held Sunday, June 11, 2006, at Doub's Woods Park in the south pavilion.
