Derek R. Rankin, son of Robert R. and Sukey L. Rankin of Hagerstown, has been commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force after completing the Air Force ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) program and graduating with a bachelor's degree from Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Va.

Rankin is a 2001 graduate of St. Maria Goretti High School in Hagerstown.




Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Jamie R. Greene, son of Tracey A. Simpson of Chambersburg, Pa., and Neil R. Greene of Haymarket, Va., is in the middle of a scheduled deployment while assigned to the amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge, homeported in Norfolk, Va.

Greene's ship deployed with USS Ashland, USS Ponce and USS Gonzalez as part of the USS Kearsarge Expeditionary Strike Group in support of the global war on terrorism and Operations Enduring/Iraqi Freedom.

Greene joined the Navy in August 2000.




Navy Fireman Ian T. Kirk, son of Karen J. Brady of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Dennis E. Kirk of Hedgesville, W.Va., is in the middle of a scheduled deployment while assigned to the amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge, homeported in Norfolk, Va.

Kirk is a 2003 graduate of Hedgesville High School.




Army Pvt. Keith D. Wantz, son of Kenneth and Debbie L. Myerly of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., has graduated from the Light-wheeled Vehicle Mechanic advanced individual training (AIT) course at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.




Army National Guard Pvt. Andrew D. Virnig, son of Rebecca Virnig of Cushing, Minn., and grandson of Janet and Paul Sollenberger of Chambersburg, Pa., has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.




Army Pvt. Andrew Garza, son of Kitty Garza of Frederick, Md., has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

Garza is a 1997 graduate of Frederick High School.
