HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Samantha Hess of Hedgesville and Rebecca Grove of Bunker Hill, W.Va., were the winners Saturday night in the Berkeley County Fire and Rescue Association Queen Scholarship Pageant.

The pageant began in 1993 and four girls from past pageants have gone on to compete in the Miss West Virginia competition, said pageant director Marilyn Blaylock.

During Saturday's pageant at Tomahawk Elementary School, Samantha was named Berkeley County Fire and Rescue Association queen and Rebecca was crowned Berkeley County Fire and Rescue Association princess, Blaylock said.

Ten contestants were vying for the two top positions, Blaylock said.

Contestants were reviewed by a panel of three judges and were judged based on their performance in interviews and in categories such as sportswear and gowns, Blaylock said.

Each candidate had a platform, which they discussed with judges, Blaylock said.

Samantha's platform was AIDS/HIV, A Major Crisis, and Rebecca's platform was The Reality of Teenage Suicide, Blaylock said.

Samantha, 15, is a 10th-grade student at Hedgesville High School and is the daughter of Daniel and Wendy Hess.

Rebecca is a 10th-grader at Musselman High School and is the daughter of Marshall and Ronda Grove of Bunker Hill.

Samantha and Rebecca will receive scholarship money, although the amounts have not been released, Blaylock said.

Last year, Danielle Cosenza of Hedgesville was crowned Berkeley County Fire and Rescue Association queen and Kori Ashton of Martinsburg, W.Va., was named Berkeley County Fire and Rescue Association princess, Blaylock said.
