Relay for Life raises more than $100,000

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. - The early goal was $44,000, but this year's Relay For Life in Jefferson County raised more than $107,000 for the American Cancer Society.

"It was fantastic," said Daniel Hart, the president of the board of the American Cancer Society's Jefferson County chapter.

Hart said 27 teams took part, walking around the Jefferson High School track all night Friday before stopping Saturday morning. Teams were encouraged to have at least one member on the track at all times, but it wasn't required.

Hart said theme laps helped entertain people. People walked one lap in sunglasses, another in western clothing, another in pajamas.

A DJ played music, which might have kept people from dozing off, he said.

The Relay For Life ended around 8 a.m., when participants received awards and ate breakfast together, Hart said.
