Fedex Ground begins hiring

June 25, 2005|by DANIEL J. SERNOVITZ

FedEx Ground earlier this month began hiring workers for its $53.5 million hub center at 11825 Newgate Blvd. in Hagerstown, beginning a three-phase process expected to result in 400 new jobs by late September, company spokesman David Westrick said.

Westrick said the company, a division of FedEx Corporation, is in the midst of establishing local pickup and delivery service at the 335,000-square-foot distribution hub on 114 acres in the Hunters Green Business Center off Hopewell Road.

Once that is complete, he said, FedEx Ground will work to establish the facility as a hub for national distribution. The facility will process about 30,000 packages per hour from between 10 and 12 satellite locations in the region. Packages collected at hub sites then are loaded by trailers and shipped between other hub sites across the country.

Westrick said he expects the hub will be at full operation by late September, when a grand opening ceremony tentatively is planned.
