'Claws take Suns in stride

June 24, 2005|By

LAKEWOOD, N.J. ? The Lakewood BlueClaws won in economic fashion on Thursday.

That's because the Hagerstown Suns were giving free passes by the handful.

Suns pitching issued nine walks and hit three Lakewood batters as the BlueClaws made the best of the five hits they did get for a 6-3 victory.

Meanwhile, the Suns took it to a major leaguer, but failed against an old, familiar face.

Hagerstown (43-30, 1-2) scored all three runs in the first two innings off Philadelphia reliever Tim Worrell, who was making his second rehab start.

After Worrell left, Nate Johnson mowed down the Suns with six innings of two-hit pitching. Johnson is 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 14 2/3 innings against the Suns this season.

Matt Miramontes made a spot start for the Suns, but allowed five walks and hit three batters. Marcelo Perez took the loss, allowing the go-ahead run in the fourth.
