Mail call from 6/23

June 24, 2005

"There were really a lot of nice articles in the paper Sunday for Father's Day. But didn't anyone know a month ago it was Mother's Day because it just seems like nobody remembers mother like they do father. And most of the time, fathers don't amount to anything."

"I completely agree with the person who called in about the rent in Hagerstown being so high. I live alone, I make about $9 a hour and my rent is $500 a month. You tell me how anybody is supposed to live on that with a car payment, utilities and other monthly bills that you have to pay. It's impossible. You have nothing to save you don't have anything extra, you can't go on vacations. If they are going to up these rents the way they are then they have to do something about the salaries. Think about it. Something really needs to be done."

"I'm calling to comment on the Defend Life demonstration. I believe everyone is entitled to their own opinion. However, I don't appreciate it when it is afflicted upon my children. My son had to ride through downtown with his hands over his eyes this morning so as not to see those disgusting pictures. I believe everyone should have their own opinion. I just don't think it should be put on other people with appalling pictures like that. I think there was a better way for them to demonstrate and get their point across."

"I was very happy to find a petition in Greenberry Hills for lighting for our neighborhood. It seems it is time to have lighting to protect our neighborhood from crime, which has been long overdue."

"It is very discouraging when you listen to all the politicians that run for a seat and then the minute they are elected to the seat they change their minds on every issue that they talked about before the election."

"I was just responding to an article here comparing Michael Jackson and O.J. Simpson to the Martha Stewart case. Just as a helpful notice. Martha Stewart was convicted of lying about a crime she was never charged with committing. Just an observation."

"Yes, the rent here is insane. I live in a small apartment in Robinwood Court and I pay $595, which is low for Hagers-town but very high for the apartment I have. I mean, it is very small. $595 is ridiculous for the incredibly small size of this place. My brother lives in Greencastle and pays only $550 for a whole half of a house. What Hagerstown is trying to do is get rid of the middle class. I'll explain. The rich are fine, they can afford anything. The poor have government assistance programs like Section 8, etc.. What's left? The middle class who don't earn enough to afford the rents and make too much to be assisted by the government. We have to pay the full cost of the high rents although we don't make nearly as much as rich people. We have to work full-time jobs, maybe even two jobs, and both spouses have to work just to afford the ridiculous rents. It's driving people right out of town. No one will do anything about it - ever. The only option is to move to Pa."

"While reading Monday night's Mail Call, I found an intersting subject on Mayor Trump having a nice smile. I assume he's a happy man. Unfortunately, he's just a paper shuffler. No disrespect meant. The poor soul doesn't have a vote. Also, he should not send letters out to anybody in the name of the mayor and the council. He does not have that right. He's probably going to do a good job once he learns what his role is as the mayor."

"The public has no idea what goes on inside these prison facilities. Maybe it's time they do. If more of the men and women would start speaking out regardless of their rank then maybe something can start being done about it. It's mental and stressful enough dealing with the type of population that we do let alone the pressures that are being administered by the adminsitration. How much can one person take actually without cracking up?"

"This is about the person who is complaining about how much rent is. They went out and tried to hunt a three-bedroom apartment and the rent was $895 to $1,000. This is to whoever is trying to find one. You need to get on the politicians. They're the ones who keep raising taxes. If you figure what the landlords have to pay to heat their buildings, then that's one of the reasons why rent is so high. The landlords can't help it. The politicians are spending your money."

"This is about the gas and oil. I think it's time for the American people to wake up a little bit. Start calling your politicians, congressman, your senators. It's time for the federal government to wake up and do something about this gas and oil. As big as the United States is, we ought to be able to get our own oil and gas. But our federal government is selling the American people down the drain to foreign countries. Until the American people wake up and do something, we're in trouble as taxpayers."
