Pet of the week

June 20, 2005

Sashi is a very distinctive feline. Black and white with a black nose, she also has an extra toe. Some cat fanciers consider these "polydactyls" to be lucky. She's young (between 1 and 3 years) and came to the Humane Society after her owner died. She's been declawed, which makes her an indoor cat who also prefers the company of adults.

Pet tip: Train your cat to refrain from undesirable behaviors such as scratching furniture and jumping on countertops. Contrary to popular belief, cats can be trained with a bit of patience, effort and understanding. Set aside time to play with your cat. While cats do not need the same level of exercise as dogs, regular play sessions will provide the physical exercise and mental stimulation your cat needs, and will strengthen the pet's bond with its owner.

Stop by the Humane Society of Washington County's Education Center at 13011 Maugansville Road in Hagers-town for more information on pet care, or call 301-733-2060 to adopt, volunteer or to make a donation.
