Feature Home - This five-bedroom colonial is ready for a family

This week's rambling five-bedroom Feature Home is made to order for a growing family with a need for child space.

Located on a big half-acre lot in the Woodcrest subdivision east of Waynesboro, Pa., the brick colonial offers room to play both outside and inside.

It only takes a few steps inside the front entrance to encounter carpeted formal living and dining rooms of a generous size typical for the house. The 21-by-15 living room is flanked by the 16-by-15 dining room.

Back of the dining room is a modern, recently remodeled kitchen with an island and a large breakfast room, which connects through sliding doors to the well-landscaped backyard with its brick-and-concrete patio. Several appliances convey, including the refrigerator and a ceramic-topped electric stove.

Snacks prepared in the kitchen can quickly be transferred to the master bedroom or the family room located on either side. The 18-by-16 master bedroom features generous storage space, a deluxe bath and a large soaking tub with whirlpool jets. It has access through atrium doors to the patio, which has connections for a hot tub.

Anchoring the 22-by-14 family room is a large brick fireplace. The back of the fireplace creates an attractive brick wall in the adjoining breakfast room.

Beyond the family room are two bedrooms connected by a full bath in a "Jack and Jill" arrangement. The similarly sized rooms are perfect for small children or for use as guest rooms

Upstairs would be a heavenly retreat for older kids. There are huge 17-by-14 and 26-by-17 bedrooms, an 18-by-17 rec room that has space for loads of activity, a full bath, a huge walk-in closet and a half-attic for more storage. Another 14-by-ll room would make a great study with ample room for computer gear.

The upstairs floor plan is relatively open, providing versatility that allows for an owner's imagination to run wild. For example, all of the large upstairs rooms could be configured as bedrooms for an extra-large family. On the other hand, it would be possible to designate much of the space upstairs for game rooms, hobby centers, studios, exercise rooms and other uses while still providing enough bedroom space for a five- to six-person family.

The home features zoned central air conditioning and a new Trane heat pump. A two-car garage and a partial unfinished basement provide additional storage space.

Located on a quiet street, the home is within easy driving distance of several established shopping areas. About five minutes away is a shopping center under construction that will feature Wal-Mart, Lowe's, and other retailers and restaurants.
