Man is charged following police chase

June 18, 2005

Police said a man who led them on a chase on Friday from Morgan County, W.Va., to Washington County - and rammed two police cars before he stopped - had two small children with him.

Stuart William Wright, 26, of Noland Village in Hagerstown, was charged with four counts of assault, two counts of child endangerment, one count of driving under the influence and several traffic violations.

Maryland State Police said the chase started about 2 p.m., when Morgan County Sheriff's Department deputies tried to stop Wright for allegedly driving recklessly.

Wright got away on Interstate 70, but Washington County deputies saw his vehicle and went after it. A Maryland state trooper also chased Wright's vehicle east of Clear Spring.

Police said Wright was blocked in several times, but got away, then rammed two police cars, one marked and one unmarked. The chase continued on Md. 63 and U.S. 40, where deputies used "stop sticks" to puncture Wright's left front tire, forcing him to stop, police said.

No one was injured, police said.
