N.J. man arrested in '95 slaying

June 18, 2005

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. -Pennsylvania State Police in McConnellsburg said Friday that they have charged a New Jersey man with murdering his wife, whose body was found in a remote wooded area in Fulton County, Pa., 10 years ago.

Stephen Alfred Vanderbeek, 51, of Ramsey, N.J., was charged on June 8 with first-degree murder, third-degree murder and aggravated assault; a warrant was obtained for his arrest.

Police said the U.S. Marshal's Service arrested Vanderbeek in his hometown on Thursday. He was there Friday awaiting extradition to Pennsylvania, police said.

With the help of DNA testing, the dead woman was identified in December 2004 - nine years after she was found - as Cynthia Louise Vanderbeek, 47.

Police said she disappeared while she was traveling from Maine to Florida with Stephen Vanderbeek in March 1995. Her family in Montgomery County, Md., later reported her as missing.

Police said a group called The Doe Network identified a possible connection between the missing woman and the dead body in April 2004.

Police plan to release more information about the case at a press conference Monday afternoon.
