The following men are members of the 48th Brigade Combat Team that recently participated in one of the most realistic scenarios offered by the U.S. Army at the National Training Center in Fort Irwin, Calif. The Maryland National Guard soldiers are members of Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 115th Infantry Regiment, based in Olney, Md.

The National Training Center, in Southern California's Mojave Desert, is the premier combat training center for desert warfare.

The 48th Brigade Combat Team, headquartered in Macon, Ga., has more than 4,000 soldiers.

-- Army National Guard Pfc. Patrick B. Beam, son of Robert L. and Nancy A. Beam of Middletown, Md.

Beam, a driver with eight years of military service, is a 1997 graduate of Middletown High School.

His wife, Keri, is the daughter of Richard D. and Nancy A. Couzins of New Oxford, Pa.

-- Army National Guard Spec. Randy A. Goetz, son of Brian Goetz of Greencastle, Pa., and Peggy L. Meyers of Sharpsburg.


Goetz, an assistant manager with seven years of military service, is a 1994 graduate of Boonsboro High School.

-- Army National Guard Pvt. Michael D. Connolly, son of Jennifer L. Connolly of Keedysville.

Connolly, a radio and telephone operator with seven years of military service, is a 2004 graduate of Paint Branch High School in Burtonsville, Md.

-- Army National Guard Master Sgt. Ronald L. Pitts, son of John F. and Mildred N. Pitts of Largo, Fla.

Pitts, a public affairs superintendent, earned a bachelor's degree in 1976 from Mount St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg, Md.

Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Demetrius A. Crofts, son of Virginia R. Crofts of Martinsburg, W.Va., recently departed on a routine, scheduled deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom with the Marines of the Anti-Terrorism Battalion, home-based at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Crofts, a 1987 graduate of Berkeley Springs (W.Va.) High School, joined the Marine Corps in July 1987.

Army Spec. Scott R. Liddick, son of Scott R. and Gigi E. Liddick of Chambersburg, Pa., is deploying to Afghanistan to serve as a member of Combined Joint Task Force-76 (CJTF-76). The soldier is regularly assigned to the Southern European Task Force (Airborne) based at Caserma Ederle, Vicenza, Italy.

CJTF-76 is a combined and joint rotation unit supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. Liddick will join other units that comprise CJTF-76 to help the Afghan people continue their progress to a free society.

Liddick is an infantryman with more than two years of military service.

His wife, Rose, is the daughter of Philip and Laura Machusko of Upper Strasburg, Pa.

Liddick is a 2002 graduate of Cumberland Valley Christian School in Chambersburg, Pa.

Marine Corps Reserve Pfc. Darrel E. Bly Jr., son of Anne T. and Darrell E. Bly of Mount Airy, Md., recently graduated from the Light Armored Vehicle Repairman Course.

Bly's job is to repair and use the weapons and equipment on which he is trained to provide protective and combative services in times of both peace and war.

Bly, a 2004 graduate of South Carroll High School in Sykesville, Md., joined the Marine Corps Reserve in October 2004.

Air Force Tech. Sgt. Jerry E. Foreman, son of Edward Foreman of Mercersburg, Pa., and Carol Frank of Chambersburg, Pa., has graduated from the Air Force Kisling Noncommissioned Officer Academy at Kapaun Air Station, Germany.

Foreman, a postal specialist with 15 years of military service, is a 1989 graduate of James Buchanan High School in Mercersburg, Pa.

John P. Richwine, son of John C. and Constance A. Richwine of Waynesboro, Pa., has been awarded an Air Force ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) college scholarship.

Upon graduating from college and completing the ROTC program, the cadets are commissioned as second lieutenants in the Air Force.

Army Pvt. Frank E. Gregg Jr., son of Frank E. Gregg Sr. and Cynthia Blake, both of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., has graduated from the Light-Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic Advanced Individual Training (AIT) course at Aberdeen (Md.) Proving Ground.

Gregg is a 2002 graduate of Berkeley Springs High School.

Cadet 1st Class Nicholas D. Leiter, son of Daniel Claton and Bonnie Pavlides Leiter, of Mount Airy, Md., and brother of Chelsea, Kyle and Haley Leiter, all of Mount Airy, graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy on May 18, 2005, with a bachelor of science degree in management.

Graduating with honors, Leiter was inducted into the Epsilon Eta Chapter of Sigma Iota Epsilon. He was an exchange student at the Naval Academy in Annapolis in the fall of 2003.

Leiter's first tour of duty will be as a student naval aviator at Naval Air Station Pensacola (Fla).

Leiter is a 2001 graduate of Linganore High School in Ijamsville, Md.

Navy Ensign Justin R. Grover, son of B. Gayle and Joseph R. Grover of Mount Airy, Md., recently graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis and was commissioned to his current rank in the United States Navy.
