Steele slated to appear at fundraiser

June 15, 2005|by TAMELA BAKER

Lt. Gov. Michael Steele will be a featured guest at a fundraiser for the Maryland Republican Party tonight in Williamsport, but that doesn't mean he'll be making any announcements there, according to Audra Miller, communications director for the state party.

Speculation has been rampant that Steele would announce soon that he's going to run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated next year by Sen. Paul Sarbanes, a Democrat. But while he's been named as a potential candidate for months, Steele hasn't yet made an official commitment.

Miller noted that as a former state party chairman, Steele is "fully committed to seeing our party grow and to seeing Republicans elected." Tonight's event, she said, "has been on his schedule for a while. Beyond that, there's no breaking news."

She did say, however, that Steele is "still strongly considering a run."

Tickets for the private fundraiser have been selling for $250 each. It is being hosted by D.M. Bowman.
