Reward is offered in assault at Chambersburg car wash

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Chambersburg police and Franklin County Crime Solvers are offering a $3,000 reward for information leading to the identification of two men who beat and robbed a man on Tuesday, May 10, at Scotties Coin Wash, 647 S. Second St.

Garnet Houpt, 74, of Chambersburg, an employee at the business, received serious injuries to his head, neck and shoulders in the assault, which took place at about 8:40 p.m., police said. Detective Scott Mummert said Houpt is still hospitalized, although he would not divulge where.

Police said two black males entered the business shortly before closing time and asked to use the restroom. They attacked Houpt and stole his wallet, police said.

Houpt described the men as being in their 20s. One was about 6 feet, 2 inches tall with a medium build and was dressed in black, including a hooded sweatshirt. The other was about 6 feet tall with a medium build and was wearing black clothing and a mask.

The Chambersburg Police Department is offering a $1,000 reward for information and Franklin County Crime Solvers is offering another $2,000, police said.
