WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Work is under way at Wayne Heights Mall to transform the vacant Ames Store into space for a new Peebles Department Store and a Dollar Tree store, according to Jerry Zeigler, code enforcement officer for Washington Township.

The project is being built for Kimco Realty of Lutherville, Md. GRC General Construction of Zullinger, Pa., had work crews on the site this week.

Kimco officials could not be reached for comment.

Randy Lail, CEO of Peebles Department Stores at the corporation's headquarters in South Hill, Va., said Thursday his company's new store will open in late fall. It will share building space with a smaller Dollar Tree store, he said.

Lail described Peebles Department Stores as a smaller version of a Bon-Ton Department Store.

"We sell name-brand apparel, shoes, gifts and accessories," he said.

The store will cover more than 20,000 square feet and employ up to 20 people, more than half of whom will work part time, he said.

Peebles has 10 stores in Pennsylvania, the closest of which is in Gettysburg, Pa. The company has seven stores each in Maryland and West Virginia. Peebles has 157 stores operating under its name nationwide, mostly east of the Mississippi River, Lail said. Peebles' parent company, Stage Stores, has outlets west of the Mississippi, he said. Combined, the companies operate more than 500 stores.

"We operate in smaller towns," Lail said. "You won't find us in big cities like Harrisburg (Pa.) or Philly."

Peebles will lease its store space from Kimco, he said.
