Members of the Hagerstown Police Department, Maryland State Police and Washington County 911 Center said Wednesday that several bear sightings were reported in the county Wednesday afternoon and evening.

Hagerstown Police Sgt. Johnny Murray said witnesses told officers that they had seen several bears in the area where Interstate 81 and U.S. 40 meet. Murray said officers dispatched to the area could not find the bears, including one that reportedly was cornered in an area of thick brush of U.S. 40.

Maryland State Police said that sightings have been reported to the department for two days, though no troopers have reported coming in contact with bears.

A 911 center dispatcher said several calls taken Wednesday evening were forwarded to the state Department of Natural Resources.
