Workshop to explain Medicare drug program

June 07, 2005

A workshop explaining a new Medicare prescription drug program taking effect in 2006 will be Wednesday, June 15, from 1 to 3 p.m., at Robinwood Medical Center Conference Room 122, 11110 Medical Campus Drive.

To register, call Cindy Earle at 301-790-8624 by June 10.

The new program will take effect in January 2006, providing a prescription drug benefit to seniors and people with disabilities who have Medicare coverage.

The June workshop is open to anyone, particularly caregivers.

Under this new program, Medicare beneficiaries who meet limited income and asset guidelines may be eligible to receive financial help with the monthly premiums, deductibles and co-pays involved in the program. This assistance is called Extra Help.

The Social Security Administration was given the responsibility of determining eligibility for individuals who meet the criteria. Letters and applications soon will be mailed to approximately 20 million people nationwide to tell them about Extra Help and to ask them to complete the applications and to return them as soon as possible.

This educational workshop will provide an overview of the program and a review of the application process and an opportunity to ask any questions.
