Fights reported at MCTC

June 07, 2005|by BRIAN SHAPPELL

At least seven men were placed in "lockup" at the Maryland Correctional Training Center following three fights at the facility Sunday evening, George Gregory, a spokesman for the Maryland Division of Correction, said Monday.

Gregory said the incidents were reported at the training center on Roxbury Road south of Hagerstown as inmates returned to two housing units from evening recreation time.

At about 8:30 p.m., two inmates began fighting, and two separate fights involving at least five other inmates began soon after, he said.

Gregory said in one of the incidents, the inmates were fighting with homemade "shanks." The other incidents involved "just fisticuffs, no weapons," he said.

Gregory said the inmates believed to be involved in the fights were put into administrative segregation, known as "lockup," while the investigation into the incidents is conducted.

Housing Unit 3 of the training center was on lockdown through late Monday afternoon as correctional officers searched the area for weapons, he said.

No serious injuries were reported in the incidents, and no additional information was released Monday.
