Literary councils add reading tutors

June 06, 2005

The Literacy Councils of Washington County and Frederick County have added eight new certified tutors.

The five new tutors from Washington County are Ginger Gates, Jeffery Jones, Joik Mun, George Rae and Sharon Raun. New Frederick County tutors are Allison Gosnell, Nicolas Edwards and Carol Bolosky.

Washington County tutor instructor Becky Hein said the county is 20 tutors short of the number needed to provide for all adults still waiting for a tutor. The county has approximately 85 active tutors but cannot keep up with the demand for both basic and English as a second language (ESL) instruction.

In addition to regular one-on-one tutoring, the Washington County organization, along with Hagerstown Community College, is providing English classes four days a week to Russian immigrants. Basic English is being taught as well as assistance with job interviews and obtaining driver licenses.
