Steeplechasers to celebrate 30th anniversary

June 05, 2005|by ANDREW MASON

A lot of miles have been covered over the past 30 years.

A lot of lasting friendships have been forged in that time as well.

That's why the Frederick Steeplechasers are throwing a party, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their running club's existence. The festivities will be held at Baker Park Gazebo, at Second and Market streets in Frederick, from 1 to 5 p.m. on June 12.

"We're hoping it's going to be big," said Anne Hafer, vice president of the Steeplechasers. "We have a lot of people who have been active all the way through the club."

Hafer said the club has roughly 200 members, representing six counties in the greater area. The Steeplechasers help direct or assist with nearly 50 events per year.

The celebration next Sunday will begin with a showcase of club history, records and other memorabilia at 1 p.m. A 3-mile scavenger run and other games for adults and children start at 2. Food and dessert will be served from 3 to 5. Cost for the scavenger run is $3, or $12 with a commemorative T-shirt.

Hafer said anyone, member or nonmember, is welcome to participate.

"We just want to promote running and fitness," Hafer said, "and we thought this would be a way to promote our club and a little bit of community spirit. If you're interested in joining a club or just running in general, you should come check it out. That would be great."
