MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -Students at Martinsburg South Middle School can cue Alice Cooper's "School's Out" song a day earlier than students at all of the county's other schools.

Because of construction under way, the sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders at South Middle will be sent home for summer after school on Monday, June 6, Berkeley County Schools spokeswoman Jaimee Borger said.

The last day for students at the rest of the county's schools is Tuesday, June 7.

Teachers at South Middle, and all of the other schools, still will need to report through Thursday, June 9.

The school is undergoing a complete renovation that requires everything inside the building to be moved into trailers. Letting students go home for summer a day earlier will help speed up the process, Borger said.

Along with new ceilings, floors and paint in the existing portion of the school, a new band room, science laboratories and gymnasium are being built in South Middle.

Borger said students need to attend on Monday because it's a regular day on the school calendar and because report cards will be distributed.

Construction also is planned or under way at other schools and the Board of Education Office on Queen Street, which will be closed on Wednesday, June 8, because power is going to be shut off. The power outage is needed so a construction crew can work on installing an elevator, Borger said.
