Benefits available for victims

The following information regarding benefits available to crime victims in Maryland through the Maryland Criminal Injuries Compensation Board was released by the state Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services.

Eligible applicants include:

· A person who sustains physical injury as a result of a crime.

· A surviving spouse or child of a homicide victim.

· Any person dependent on primary support from a homicide victim.

· Any person who assumed responsibility for funeral expenses of a homicide victim.

The following are among qualifications necessary to receive aid:

· Must report the crime to police within 48 hours.

· Must have incurred at least $100 in out-of-pocket expenses or have lost at least two continuous weeks of pay.

· Must provide proof that a crime occurred.


· Must cooperate with authorities.

The compensation board awards for the following expenses:

· Medical expenses up to $45,000.

· Disability up to $25,000

· Funeral expenses up to $5,000.

· Total dependency up to $25,000.

· Partial dependency up to $17,500.

· Counseling up to $5,000.

· Crime scene cleansing up to $250.
