Memorial Day events

The events listed below will be held Monday:

· Martin L. "Marty" Snook Park, Halfway, the annual Memorial Day service to honor veterans, beginning at 9 a.m.

Gen. Boyd Cook will be keynote speaker.

· Smithsburg Veterans Memorial Park, Water Street, the annual Memorial Day commemoration at 4 p.m. with Ron Hovis, Navy veteran, as keynote speaker.

Stephanie Pyle of Waynesboro, Pa., will sing for the event.

Those who attend are asked to bring chairs.

· Intersection of Leiter Street and Leitersburg-Smithsburg Road, noon, a Memorial Day service.

Paul Hammond, a retired army sergeant, will be a speaker. The event is organized by the Leitersburg Grange Society.

· Rest Haven Cemetery, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, the annual Memorial Day celebration at 11 a.m. with a bagpipe rendition of "Amazing Grace" and then echo taps.

At 11:30 a.m., the Appalachian Wind Quintet will perform its 13th annual concert - outdoors if weather permits; in the chapel in case of rain.

More than 300 American flags donated by families of veterans will be flown throughout the day.

· Chambersburg (Pa.) Memorial Square, 10 a.m., following a Memorial Day Parade.

The Joint Veterans Council of the Chambersburg Area will sponsor the parade and participants will form at 8:45 a.m. on Fifth Avenue and Lincoln Way East. The parade begins about 9:15 a.m.

· Gettysburg (Pa.) National Cemetery, 138th annual Memorial Day parade and services.

Following a luncheon at 11:30 a.m. at the Gettysburg VFW building, the parade will begin at 2 p.m., ending in the cemetery.

At 3 p.m., Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon, will be keynote speaker.

· Waynesboro (Pa.) Memorial Day service and parade. Parade starts at 9 a.m. and heads west on Main Street, turns south on Broad Street and concludes at Memorial Park. Service begins at approximately 11 a.m.

· Greencastle (Pa.) Memorial Day parade begins at 10 a.m. at Allison and Baltimore streets, continues west on Baltimore Street to Cedar Hill Cemetery where a program begins at 11 a.m. Capt. Andrea Mills is the speaker.

· Mercersburg (Pa.) Memorial Day parade and service starts at 8:30 a.m. with a parade on Main Street to Fairview Cemetery. The speaker for the service is Brig. Gen. Michael E. DeArmond.

· A Memorial Day concert featuring the Cumberland Valley Symphonic Band and the Towne Singers will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Kiwanis Band Shell at Chambersburg's Memorial Park.
