Motorcyclist flown to Shock Trauma Center

May 29, 2005

A 23-year-old man was flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center Saturday night after he crashed his motorcycle on the Halfway Boulevard ramp off southbound Interstate 81, a Washington County Emergency Services dispatcher said.

The dispatcher said initial calls about the 7:04 p.m. accident reported the motorcyclist was seen going up the ramp at a high rate of speed when he crashed.

Maryland State Police Sgt. Robert Reid said that he could not release specifics about the man's injuries nor confirm his age. He said police were trying to reach the man's family.

The dispatcher said another accident occurred shortly afterward just north of where the motorcyclist crashed. In that accident, a 16-year-old girl was traveling down southbound I-81, north of Halfway Boulevard, when she crashed head-on into a guardrail. He said she sustained minor injuries.

Reid said the southbound lanes of the interstate were closed for about 35 minutes.
