Roundup - Jefferson advances to Region II final

PREP BASEBALL



MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Josh Simons pitched a complete game, allowing no earned runs and striking out 11 to lead Jefferson to a 6-1 win over Musselman in the West Virginia AAA Region II semifinals at P.O. Faulkner Park on Thursday.

Simons also had a strong day at the plate, collecting two hits including a home run while also driving in three of the Cougars' six runs.

Brian Collins, Brendan McLaughlin and Jonathan Hash each added two hits for the Cougars (30-6) who will face Bridgeport in the region final tonight at 6:30.

Joey Pletcher had two of the Applemen's (15-12) seven hits.

Beall 3, Brunswick 2


FREDERICK - Justin Shite hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning, and Beall held on to beat Brunswick (14-10) in a Maryland Class 1A semifinal game at McCurdy Field.

Beall relied on strong defense, making several outstanding defensive plays to stifle Brunswick scoring threats.

Justen Smith struck out seven for Brunswick (14-10).

Spring Grove 4 Chambersburg 2


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Zach Shuler went 3-for-3 and scored two runs to lead Spring Grove past Chambersburg in a second round District 3 playoff game.

Marshall Gilbert, Ryan Leiland, and Brian Massimilla had two hits apiece for Chambersburg.

Mercersburg 2, Penn Charter 1


PHILADELPHIA - Scott Edgin pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts and Josh Davis hit a two-run home run to lead Mercersburg Academy to a victory over top-seeded Penn Charter in the quarterfinals of the Pennsylvania Private Schools State Tournament.

Musselman eliminated


VIENNA, W.Va. - Faline Brown had a sixth innng RBI triple to drive in Musselman's only run in a 2-1 loss to Cabell Midland in the opening round of the Class AAA state tournament.

Brown had two hits in the opener for the Applemen.

Tiffany Barnisky hit a two-run home run for the Applemen as they rallied for three runs in the sixth inning but lost to John Marshall, 4-3.

Barnisky had two of the Applemen's seven hits in the game, while Megan Holmes drove in the Applemen's other run of the game on a single.

The Applemen finish the season at 21-4.




COLLEGE GOLF



NJCAA Divison II Golf Nationals


SCOTTSBORO, Ala. - Hagerstown Community College's Christian Breed is in 52nd place with a three-round total of 224 in the NJCAA Division II Golf Nationals at Goose Pond Colony.

Steve Young of HCC in in 96th with a 234. Frederick Community College's Josh Ward (237, 104th place) and Ben Fischer (252, 121st place) are also competing.

The fourth round will be played today.
