We're getting college kids cornered

May 22, 2005|by MARK KELLER

"What ever happened to ...?"

It's a question our writers are asked all the time - sometimes when we're out covering events, sometimes through phone calls or e-mails.

Because the majority of the events that our staff covers are at the high school level, there's been a tendency for us to lose track of many of the athletes who continue their sports careers in college.

Over the past few months, we've taken steps to improve on that. We began a bi-weekly feature in January called "College Corner," which rounds up as many athletes from area high schools playing at the collegiate level as we can fit into one column. The feature normally runs on Sunday. This week's will appear in Monday's Morning Herald.

Staff writer Tim Koelble has put together a sizable list of schools and athletes to work from, and he checks numerous Web sites and faxes received at The Herald-Mail every day for performances by local athletes.

Even with that large list of names, we realize that there is an even larger number of athletes out there that we still are missing. Therefore, I'd like to enlist the help of parents, coaches, school administrators and friends in expanding our database of local athletes playing in college.

If you know of anyone who played high school sports in the Tri-State area who took part in college sports this year - or will be playing in college next year - please send his or her name, their high school, the college they are attending and the sport they are playing to Tim Koelble at koelble@herald-mail.com

We'll get their name added to our list so we can look out for those athletes and include them in our roundups.

And, hopefully, you'll never have to ask again: "Whatever happened to ...?"
