Suns make BlueClaws crabby with late homer

May 20, 2005

LAKEWOOD, N.J. - Carlos Gomez led off the 10th inning with a home run Thursday to lift the Hagerstown Suns to a 2-1 victory over Lakewood.

Suns closer Carlos Muniz was forced to work hard for his 10th save, striking out Ryan Frith with runners on second and third to preserve the win.

Tim Worthington got the victory after replacing starter Gabriel Hernandez in the seventh. Hernandez was at his best with six shutout innings, allowing three hits while walking one and striking out nine in the no-decision.

The Suns took a 1-0 lead in the fifth against Lakewood starter J.A. Happ with Tyler Davidson leading off with a single. Davidson, not known for his speed, got a jump on a hit-and-run play and scored all the way from first on Ryan Coultas' double down the left-field line.

Lakewood knotted the game at 1-1 in the seventh when Jason Jaramillo doubled to right and scored when Worthington threw away Frith's bunt.

The Suns had a chance to take the lead in the eighth with runners on first and third with none out. But BlueClaws reliever Jacob Tompkins struck out Mike Carp, Jesus Flores and Ambiorix Concepcion in succession to preserve the tie.

Worthington escaped a bases-loaded situation in the ninth by striking out John Hardy and Timi Moni to force extra innings.

Grant Psomas and Wilson Batista had two hits each to lead the Suns' eight-hit attack.
