MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A Martinsburg man was indicted Wednesday by a Berkeley County grand jury on a charge of leaving the scene of an accident involving death, stemming from a fatal hit-and-run last December.

Gregory L. White, 47, of 2050 Martins Landing, Apt. 615, was indicted on the charge in connection with the death of Michael Briden, 45, also of Martins Landing in Martinsburg.

Briden was killed Dec. 18, 2004, as he was walking along Dry Run Road.

Martinsburg Police Department Sgt. Brian Yost, a certified accident reconstruction expert, investigated the scene of the 7:48 a.m. incident and said it appeared that Briden had been hit from behind, police said.

Police received a tip a few hours after the accident that White was at City Hospital in Martinsburg asking for a medical exam. He told police that he had been involved in an accident and that he had hit a deer, police have said.

Police said that White's car, a 1996 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, had damage to its windshield and roof.

White came to the police station voluntarily, again telling police that he had hit a deer. He later changed his story, saying he had hit a person, got out of his car and saw no one, so he went home, police have said.

Grand jury proceedings are held behind closed doors. Of the 16 jurors in the panel, 12 must agree for a "true bill" to be returned, which allows the case to proceed to a possible trial.

Neither defendants nor their attorneys are allowed to be present, and an indictment is not an indication of guilt.
