Hagerstown voters on Tuesday selected political newcomer and local businessman Richard "Dick" F. Trump as their mayor, ousting incumbent William M. Breichner, according to unofficial results Tuesday night.
Trump's 1,618 votes led Breichner's 1,339 votes by a margin of 279. Another 1,160 write-in votes were cast, although it was not clear Tuesday how many were for former Mayor Robert E. Bruchey II, who started a write-in campaign after losing the March 8 primary.
The results will not be final until a verification scheduled for today and an absentee ballot count scheduled for Thursday are complete. If Tuesday's results stand after being verified, the 210 absentee ballots that were distributed will not change the outcome of the mayor's race.
The new administration is set to take office May 30.
