HAGERSTOWN - Staples Inc. plans to add as many as 40 jobs and up to 180,000 square feet to its mid-Atlantic distribution center on Hopewell Road near Hagerstown.

The 840,000-square-foot Staples Distribution Center will be more than 1 million square feet when the project is completed this summer. Construction will begin this month.

The Hagerstown-Washington County Economic Development Commission announced the plans Monday.

"This increased capacity will further enable Staples to provide our store customers with an easy shopping experience by having the products they need when they need them. Washington County is a great place to do business and we look forward to growing our operations here," Bill Ross, vice president of distribution at Staples, said in a written statement.

The distribution center opened on 120 acres at 11540 Hopewell Road in April 1997 and has 81 receiving and shipping doors, according to the statement.

"It's exciting to see one of our valued members of the local business community growing and expanding," EDC Executive Director Timothy R. Troxell said in a statement. "Staples has served as a catalyst for Washington County's commercial and industrial growth, especially in the Hopewell Valley Industrial Area. It's wonderful to see them further investing in our community."

Staples opened its first retail store in Brighton, Mass. in May 1986. As of February 2005, the company operated 1,426 retail stores throughout the United States and Canada, according to staples.com.

The company totaled $14.4 billion in sales in 2004, according to the Web site.
