Boonsboro advances to semifinals

PREP BASEBALL



BOONSBORO - Corey Robinson had three hits and three RBI as Boonsboro crushed Allegany 10-0 in the Maryland Class 1A West quarterfinals Monday.

Matt Byers and Matt Fortese each had three RBI for the Warriors, while Jere Mills had three hits.

Brandon Painter allowed two hits and struck out five for the Warriors (14-6-1).

Boonsboro travels to play Williamsport in the semifinals Wednesday.

Northern Garrett 5, Clear Spring 4


ACCIDENT, Md. - Aaron Mills, Scott Keeney and Andrew Blickenstaff each had two hits for Clear Spring in a loss to Northern Garrett in the Maryland Class 1A West quarterfinals.

Northern Garrett scored all five of its runs in the first inning and all five runs were unearned.

Corey Baker allowed two hits in six innings of relief for the Blazers (6-12).

Brunswick 11, Digital Harbor 0


BRUNSWICK, Md. - Chris Porter pitched a shutout for his first varsity win as Brunswick beat Digital Harbor to advance to the Maryland Class 1A South semifinals.

For Brunswick (12-9), Andrew Derr went 2-for-4 with two doubles, Josh Via went 2-for-3 with a two-run double, Seth Keyser went 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI, Aaron Main went 2-for-2 with an RBI and Pat Curry hit a two-run double.

Brunswick hosts Poolesville at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Frederick 4, North Carroll 2


FREDERICK, Md. - Trailing 2-1, Frederick rallied for two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and held on to beat North Carroll in a Maryland Class 3A West quarterfinal.

Mike Fitzgerald started the rally with a single, went to second on a sacrifice by Cory Rhodes and came home to tie the game on a single by Austin Vesper, who scored on a single by Wes Gross for a 3-2 lead.

Billy Gross (8-0) pitched a five-hitter for the win.

Frederick (17-2) will host Northwest or Einstein on Wednesday in the semifinals.

Catoctin 3, Oakland Mills 1


THURMONT, Md. - Jake Yocum and Justin Greenup each had two hits and Danny Duranko had a two-run single to lift Catoctin past Oakland Mills in Maryland Class 1A South quarterfinal action.

Calvin Lewis, Zach Sweeney and Yocum combined to throw a three-hitter for the Cougars (11-9), who will host Tuscarora on Wednesday at 4.

Chambersburg 6, Cumberland Valley 5


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Josh Frey hit a home run and drove in two runs to lead Chambersburg past Cumberland Valley in the Mid-Penn playoffs.

Kyle Helm had three hits and an RBI for the Trojans (16-5), while Brian Massimilla hit a two-run single, Austin McNew added an RBI and winning pitcher Andrew Burke struck out 10.

Chambersburg faces Lower Dauphin today.

Broadfording 19, Calvary 9


John Kehr had four hits, including a home run, for Broadfording Christian, which exploded for 12 runs in the sixth inning to come from behind and defeat Calvary Christian for the Mason Dixon Christian Conference title.

Paul Merson and Josh Bishop each three hits for the Lions (14-6), while Mikkel Wallech had two.

Fort Hill 5, South Hagerstown 2


CUMBERLAND, Md. - Jamie Fowler struck out 11 and allowed no earned runs, but Fort Hill (19-1) took advantage of five errors by the Rebels to win their Maryland Class 2A West quarterfinal game.

Lindsay Beattie and Brianna Hammond each drove in a run for the Rebels (11-9).

Fowler had 60 strikeouts in her final five starts.

Catoctin 2, Poolesville 0


THURMONT, Md. - Sara Wastler and Kasey Styles both had RBI singles in the bottom of the sixth inning as Catoctin squeaked by Poolesville in the Maryland Class 1A South quarterfinals.

Alicia Brandenburg pitched a two-hitter with seven strikeouts for the Cougars (17-2).

Brunswick 8, Oakland Mills 1


BRUNSWICK, Md. - Megan Epley went 3-for-4 with a two home runs and three RBI and Melanie Kozak pitched a three-hitter with nine strikeouts as Brunswick beat Oakland Mills in the Maryland Class 1A South quarterfinals.

Hillary Remsburg went 3-for-3 with an RBI double for Brunswick (15-4), while Kozak added two hits.

Brunswick travels to play Catoctin on Wednesday.

Greencastle 8, Susquehanna Township 0


NEWVILLE, Pa. - Sarah Signore threw her fourth no-hitter this season while striking out 13, and Kris Root had two hits as Greencastle defeated Susquehanna Township in the Mid-Penn Conference Class AAA tournament.

Jessica Ritchey's RBI double in the first inning got Greencastle (18-3) started, and the Blue Devils got hits from eight different players in the shutout.

Greencastle is now guaranteed two more games in the Mid-Penn tournament and must win at least one to qualify for the PIAA District 3-AAA tournament.

VanBrakle MVP in SEC tourney


GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Stephanie VanBrakle, a Chambersburg graduate, was named MVP of the Southeastern Conference Tournament as Alabama defeated Georgia 2-0 Sunday to claim its second SEC softball title in three years.

VanBrakle is the first Alabama player to be named MVP. In the Crimson Tide's 3-0 win over Tennessee in the semifinals, VanBrakle pitched a one-hit shutout and hit a three-run homer.
