Suns relievers reign in win over Greensboro

May 15, 2005

The Hagerstown Suns came out of a rain delay and reigned over Greensboro.

Mike Devaney and Bo Bowman combined for 10 strikeouts over 7 1/3 innings of relief while Derran Watts' two-run single capped a three-run second inning Saturday to lift the Suns to a 6-2 win.

The Suns (25-11) lost starter Gabriel Hernandez after a 1-hour, 31-minute rain delay, who trailed 1-0 at the time the tarp was pulled on the field. Devaney (2-0) went 4 1/3 innings of two-hit pitching while striking out five to stuff the Grasshoppers.

Hagerstown erased the 1-0 deficit against Greensboro starter Allen Baxter in the second inning. Grant Psomas reached first and took third on Ambiorix Concepcion's double before Watts' single. Aaron Hathaway also singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch to give Devaney a 3-1 lead.

Hagerstown jumped to a 5-1 lead in the fifth on a fly ball by Wilson Batista that center fielder Jai Miller dropped while trying to pull it out of his glove. The play scored Armand Gaerlan from third and put Batista on third. Concepcion flew out to score Batista.

Bowman came on and pitched three shutout innings, allowing two hits.

Gaerlan drove in the Suns' last run in the sixth.

Josh Fulton homered off Suns' closer Carlos Muniz in the ninth.
