Local briefs - Poetry winners named

Washington County Free Library and Antietam Review - a literary and photography magazine published by the Washington County Arts Council announces the winners of their eighth annual Washington County Poetry Contest. Two winning entries and an honorable mention were selected from each of five age categories from second grade through adult. More than 185 poems were submitted for this year's contest. Original poems could be on any topic, in any style and be no more than one page in length. All entrants were required to be residents of Washington County. Poems were judged by Sonja James, associated editor of Antietam Review.

- In the adult division, "The Rabbit and the Lynx" by Sally Jo Bowser and "Sunlight" by Jeffrey Sabo won, and "Labor of Love" by Ruby Irene Diffendal received an honorable mention.

- In the ninth- through 12th-grade division, "Carried Here" by Courtney Logsdon and "Summer Nights" by Kimberly Sullivan won, and "Light from the Darkness" by Nicholas C. Hall received an honorable mention.

- In the sixth- through eighth-grade division, "Space" by Grace O'Brien and "The Forgotten Friend" by Rachel Shirk won, and "Reptilian Glacier" by Evan Dennis received an honorable mention.

- In the fourth- through fifth-grade division, "White Is" by Katey Eby and "The Beach" by Angela Kang won, and "The Rain Storm" by Tristan Hartle received an honorable mention.

- In the second- through third-grade division, "Pokmon" by Cian O'Reilly and "Daddy's Little Girl" by Katherine Mae Fowler won, and "The Cat, The Rat, and the Mole" by Kara Burkett received an honorable mention.

The winning poems will be on display at Washington County Free Library through May.

Labyrinths on display in Hagerstown


FREDERICK, Md. - Two labyrinths will be open to the public for walking from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. today on the grounds of Unitarian Universalist Church of Hagerstown, Cearfoss Pike, Md. 58, Hagerstown.

Diana Foley will present an historical overview of labyrinths and the value of walking meditation as a spiritual practice and a tool for personal growth at 12:30 p.m.




Show choir celebrates 15th anniversary


CLEAR SPRING - Clear Spring High School Reflections Show Choir will celebrate its 15th anniversary with a spring choral concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, at Clear Spring High School auditorium.

Tickets cost $4 for adults and $2 for students, and can be purchased at the door. Concert is free for show choir alumni.




Spring Cabin Festival on Sunday


BUNKER HILL, W.Va. - The Morgan Cabin Spring Festival will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 15, at Morgan Cabin, W.Va. 26. Arts and craft displays, a blacksmith, and living history activities will be held.

Entertainment will be provided by Patent Pending. Activities also include food, an apple pie baking contest and presentations by re-enactors.




'Tintypes' on stage in Frederick, Md.


JEFFERSON, Md. - Frederick County Performing Arts Company will present the musical, "Tintypes," at 8 p.m. tonight, Friday, May 20, and Saturday, May 21, and 2 p.m. Sunday, May 15, and Sunday, May 22, at Frederick County Performing Arts Company Black Box Theater, 3884 Roundtree Road.

Newcomer's Unlimited to meet


Newcomer's Unlimited will meet Thursday, May 19, at Fountainhead Country Club in Hagerstown. Registration and a social period begins at 11:30 a.m., followed by a business meeting at noon, and a fashion show fundraiser luncheon at 12:15 p.m.

The luncheon price of $25 includes entree, beverages, dessert, tax and gratuity, and a donation to Newcomer's chosen charities. Reservations are due by Monday, May 16. UAW retirees plan meeting


Local 171, UAW Retiree Chapter will meet at 1 p.m. Monday, May 16, at the Local 171 Union Hall, Maugans Avenue, Hagerstown. Bring canned goods for the food bank.
