Suns pull away in extra innings

May 10, 2005

HICKORY, N.C. - The Hagerstown Suns took advantage of three Hickory errors to score five runs in the top of the 10th inning and beat the Crawdads 10-5 on Monday.

Derran Watts drove in the go-ahead run with a two-run single, but three straight Hickory miscues extended the inning for the Suns (21-10), who have won three straight.

Ryan Coultas hit a pair of solo home runs and Mike Carp added a solo blast for the Suns. Matt Miramontes (2-0) got the win, allowing just one hit - a three-run homer by Steve Lerud on the first pitch he threw - over 4 2/3 innings.

Lerud's homer gave Hickory a 5-3 lead, but the Suns tied the score in the eighth with four straight hits, including a two-run double by Carp.

Carp and Grant Psomas drew consecutive walks from Dave Davidson (0-2) to start the Hagerstown 10th. Armand Gaerlan - who was inserted as a pinch runner for Carp - and Psomas moved up on a double steal, then scored on Watts' base hit. Watts advanced to second on the throw to the plate.

With one out, Wilson Batista reached on an error that moved Watts to third. Coultas followed with a liner to third that was dropped. A throw to get Batista at second was late, and the ensuing throw to first was wide, allowing Watts to score and Batista and Coultas to advance another base.

After a walk, Corey Coles bounced an infield single over the pitcher for a 9-5 lead. Ambiorix Concepcion followed with a sacrifice fly to score Coultas.
