This house is perfect for summer fun

April 30, 2005|by DAVE THOMPSON of HomeSource

This week's HomeSource Feature Home is perfect for people who like to spend some time in the backyard during the summer and would be a nice choice for a growing family.

The attractive two-story brick-and-siding colonial, custom built by Hagerstown native and former major league baseball player Leo Burke, is located on an oversize half-acre lot in the Fountainhead North development. There's a brick patio out back that's an ideal place to grill some steaks. When supper's ready, simply adjourn to a roomy wood deck next to the patio to enjoy the meal. To keep the children occupied, send them off to the play area with an attractive swing-and-slide set (which conveys with the house) in a rear corner of the yard. A wood fence encloses the yard to help keep kids and pets safe.

The property is nicely landscaped, with a neighbor's trees at the back providing summer shade and fall color.

Step in from the backyard through a recently installed Pella sliding door and you're in a 20-by-12-foot family room that includes a full brick fireplace.

Next to the family room is a 21-by-14 eat-in kitchen that features warm custom cherry cabinetry. Special attractions include an extensive pantry with revolving shelves and a built-in desk. Among the appliances are a refrigerator and dishwasher that are less than two years old. Both the kitchen and adjoining laundry/mudroom area were recently tiled. The mudroom leads in from the large two-story garage.

At the front of the main floor are two rooms, a 16-by-12 living room and 14-by-13 dining room. Either would lend itself to use for formal entertaining or as a study or home office.

Upstairs are four bedrooms, including an 18-by-13 master, and two full baths. The current owners removed original carpeting in three of the bedrooms last fall and installed the added bonus of 3/4-inch hardwood floors. The bedrooms also received a fresh painting.

Below grade, there's loads of finished space at the basement level, including a full bath, a den that could also serve as a bedroom, a large room with cabinetry, sink and space for appliances that can be set up as a kitchen, and a big rec room. Featuring its own walk-in entrance, the basement area is a great in-law apartment and gives the house a total of more than 3,600 square feet of finished living space.

Other nice touches include a dual-zone heating and air conditioning system with air filtration (installed in 2004) and a radon mitigation system. When the hot-water heater was replaced recently, it was upgraded to a 75-gallon tank.

The property will be open to the public on Sunday, May 1, from 2 to 4 p.m.
