Mail Call

April 29, 2005

"I wrote a letter to the editor about the Willie Mays street naming-thing last year around the time he was here. It was a reply to Tim Rowland's glorification of Willie Mays. Rowland's article made it sound like we owe Mays more than a street name. My letter said we owe him nothing, and this street-naming thing is just exploiting the fame he later achieved after Hagerstown treated him bad in 1950. I said if we give Mays a street name, give the unknowns a street, too, who were ridiculed for their race. Is it about fame or race?"

"Is there anyone out there who has seen the DVD 'In Plane Site' about 9/11 being a conspiracy? It is an excellent documentary and brings up very interesting points and facts about 9/11, like the fact there were no plane parts found at the Pentagon. The DVD shows photographic and video evidence of each point scrutinized. I wanted to know how many people in Hagers-town believe something is very strange about the events of 9/11 but are afraid to tell people. This is a good place to post how you feel."

"I'm calling in response to the seat belts on school buses, I would just like to say that I can't believe that this will ever work because children are all different sizes and who would be policing and supervising that each of these seat belts are on each one of these different-size children properly across their lap and across their shoulder and that they would be on at all times?"

- Washington County

"This is in response to the man who asked why the landfill couldn't be opened longer. The county said it couldn't because they would have to pay overtime. The solution could be to have part of your staff work a later shift. Then you don't have to have them work overtime. That is what most businesses do to accommodate customers."

- Washington County

"On the Habitat house. It's OK to build the houses but I thought they were a Christian organization which would respect Sunday's no day of labor. It surprised me that they worked on Sunday."

- Maugansville

"Why don't the County Commissioners and the mayor and council use a little common sense and realize that there is a big jewel right on Downsville Pike, the vacant Allegheny building, which would make a perfect place for the hospital."

- Washington County

"We need several traffic lights installed on Maugans Avenue where traffic from I-81 tries to get onto Maugans Avenue. It's a very dangerous situation. Can we get something done before someone gets killed? I hope somebody will go out there and take a look at it and get some lights installed."

"I read in Mail Call about someone who said all you Republicans have all these little catchphrases, 'bring it on;' 'get 'er done;' and said here's two new ones, 'bring 'em home,' and 'forget about it.' Yeah, I might say it's good to have a home to bring them to and the individual who wrote that didn't realize the tremendous effort that our military is doing and thank God for a president like President Bush."

- Washington County

"I would like to give some information to remind the college football fans, especially Maryland Terrapins football fans, that Saturday at 4 o'clock, Maryland has the Red and White spring scrimmage at Byrd Stadium. Parking is free and the stadium is free. You can't beat that. Go Terps."

"The opinion of cleaning up the airwaves is not all about the children. I do not want to see nudity or hear filth and if you do, then go rent a video, but don't subject others to this lifestyle. No, life does not have to be vulgar. It can be clean and pleasant."

- Sharpsburg

"I would like to speak on behalf of South High's class of 1973. Little did we know when we shared a classroom and walked the halls with Derek Kee that God had already mapped out a plan for Derek's life. He became Bishop Derek Kee, a servant of the Lord. To Bishop Derek Kee's family, we express our deepest sympathy and we rejoice in our hearts and spirits that we will see our brother and the Lord again. That is a promise from God himself, so rest in peace, brother Derek, until we meet at the marriage supper of the Lamb. K.H. Class of 1973."

- Hagerstown

"I would like to know why they changed the type in 'Dear Abby?' They have the type so small that people with bad eye- sight can't even hardly read it unless they have a magnifying glass. Why can't they print it like everything else, in standard type?

- Washington County

"To the person who claims that it takes three gallons of gas to produce every gallon of ethanol. You've been brain- washed by oil the companies' propaganda. If it does help the big farmers and we reduce our imports of oil, what is wrong with that?"

"I'm calling in reference to the barking dog. If it barks continually, there may be a need. Does it have food, water and shelter? If it's chained constantly, the leash will get tight as the dog grows but like humans they also like attention. If you feel it's being neglected in anyway, call the SPCA."

- Hagerstown

"I read about the catchphrases someone put in Mail Call for Republicans like 'get 'er done' and 'bring it on.' You know, it is much better than the Democrats' catchphrases, 'ignore it and it will go away." Or their other catchphrase, "it's all America's fault." Those are the two catch phrases for the Democrats."
