Voting precincts consolidated

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Franklin County Judge John R. Walker on Tuesday ordered two Chambersburg precincts to be consolidated for the May 17 primary.

Walker signed the order to consolidate Chambersburg's Third Ward, First Precinct into Chambersburg's Third Ward, Second Precinct at the request of the Franklin County Election Board.

"It was hard to staff, you didn't have many people voting and the cost," County Deputy Chief Clerk Jean Byers said of the reasons the county wanted to eliminate the First Precinct. According to the petition submitted by the election board, only about 70 people vote there during primary elections, while staffing, rental fees, ballots, voting booths and supplies cost the county about $700.

As of the Nov. 2, 2004, general election, the First Precinct had 546 registered voters, compared with 1,266 in the Second Precinct.

The polling place for the First Precinct was the Chambersburg Recreation Center at 235 S. Second St. Those voters now will go to the Second Precinct polling place at First United Methodist Church at 225 S. Second St., according to court records.

The Third Ward is in the southwest portion of Chambersburg, according to court records. The consolidation reduces the number of precincts in the county from 75 to 74, Byers said.
