Dance around the maypole

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Shepherdstown Morris invites you to help kill off old man winter and induce fertility in the crops and livestock in a traditional May Day celebration Saturday, May 7.

The day's festivities begin with a parade down German Street from Trinity Episcopal Church to Princess Street and then up the alley to the Maypole which will be erected on the McMurran Lawn. Participants in the parade should wear clothing that is new or brightly colored.

The day also will include Morris Dance performances at 3 p.m. at the Bavarian Inn. Each group of dancers also will perform a show dance on King Street at 5 p.m. outside town hall.

On Sunday, the woven maypole will be taken down and paraded through the Farmer's Market.

Dancers will perform a final stand in town at 10:30 a.m. and then move the festivities at 2 p.m. to Harpers Ferry on Potomac Street.
