Fire damages home in Smithsburg

April 24, 2005

SMITHSBURG - A fire of undetermined origin left a mother and her two children homeless early Saturday and caused more than $165,000 in damage, said Steven K. Lewis, chief of the Smithsburg Community Volunteer Fire Co.

The woman's name was not available. She was taken by ambulance to Washington County Hospital for evaluation, but was not believed to be seriously injured, Lewis said.

The 3:10 a.m. fire is under investigation by the state fire marshal's office.

The fire in the one-and-a-half story frame house is believed to have started in a downstairs bedroom and spread upstairs, Lewis said.

The original structure is of log construction with an addition. New construction was evident and its materials aided in spreading the fire, he said.

Water was obtained from a nearby stream and pond.

Units from Washington County and Franklin County, Pa., responded.
