Bikes collected at drive

April 24, 2005

The goal on April 16 was to collect at least 50 bicycles at Otterbein United Methodist Church in Hagerstown for Bikes for the World. But when the three-hour drive was over, 285 bikes had been received.

"We filled a 24-foot box truck with 185 bikes," said Mike Johnston, one of the organizers of the drive. Approximately 50 more bikes were delivered later and another 50 were broken down for parts. Johnston said the Hagerstown Union Rescue Mission made a large donation of bikes.

Most of the bikes collected in Hagerstown are being shipped to Guatemala and Sri Lanka. Johnston said approximately 10 people worked continuously from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. on what organizers hope will become an annual event.
