Ryan Lipella from Smithsburg recently received three awards from the United States Achievement Academy.

Ryan, who attends St. Maria Goretti High School in Hagers-town, has been named an All-American Scholar Award Winner, USAA National Leadership & Service Award Winner and was also selected for induction into the 2005 National Honor Roll for Academic Achievement. These programs offer recognition to superior students who excel in the academic disciplines.

Ryan's name will appear in the United States Achievement Academy Official Yearbook, the National Honor Roll Commemorative Edition and the All-American Scholar Yearbook, which are published nationally.

Ryan was nominated for these awards by Jay Heefner, director of guidance at St. Maria Goretti.

Ryan is the son of Ron and JoAnn Lipella of Smithsburg, and the grandson of Marguerite Lipella of Hagerstown.

The following local residents were named to the Dean's List at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Ga., for the winter 2005 quarter:


Michael O'Brien of Hagers-town. O'Brien is a illustration major and is the son of Harry O'Brien.

Elizabeth Coleman of Williamsport. Coleman is a fashion major and is the daughter of Joe Coleman and Mary Perkins.

Thirteen Mercersburg Academy seniors were chosen for induction into the school's chapter of the Cum Laude Society, as announced on April 1, by Head of School Douglas Hale. The society, which parallels that of Phi Beta Kappa in colleges and universities, honors students with especially strong and sustained academic achievement.

Local students acknowledged for their achievement are:

Claire Elyse Lazo-Miller, daughter of Teresa Lazo-Miller of Camp Hill, Pa. and Mark Miller of Chambersburg, Pa.

Melissa Marie McCartney, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael F. McCartney of Dry Run, Pa.

Joseph Colter Sabol, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph G. Sabol of Mercersburg, Pa.

Stephanie Erin Walker, daughter of Stephen N. Walker and Carlton A. Cook-Walker of McConnellsburg, Pa.

Christopher David Van Booven, son of Mr. and Mrs. Norman L. Van Booven of Mercersburg.

Phi Theta Kappa, the national honor society at Hagers-town Community College, recently inducted 60 members in the college's Kepler Theater.

To be eligible for the honor, students must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or higher and must have completed 12 credit hours of college-level work at HCC as a full-time student, or 24 credit hours of college-level work at HCC as a part-time student.

Sara Myers-Silverman, a junior majoring in social work at Ferrum College, Ferrum, Va., has been invited to become a member of the Alpha Chi National Honor society. Myers-Silverman is from Clear Spring and is a graduate of Clear Spring High School.

Alpha Chi is a coeducational society whose purpose is to promote academic excellence and exemplary character among college and university students and to honor those who achieve such distinction.

Berklee College of Music, Boston, announces that Hunter Wade of Hagerstown has earned placement on the Dean's List for the fall semester of the 2004-2005 academic year.
