Brandenburg leads Cougars past 'Roaders

THURMONT, Md. - Alecia Brandenburg fired a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts as No. 2 Catoctin handed No. 4 Brunswick its first loss of the season, 5-0, to take control of the MVAL Antietam race.

Kasey Stiles had three hits and Sara Wastler added two hits for the Cougars (9-1, 7-0). Stiles and Wastler each drove in two runs.

The Railroaders (7-1, 5-1) committed three errors in the loss.

No. 5 Greencastle 4 No. 2 James Buchanan 1

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Sarah Signore scattered four hits and fanned 13 as Greencastle knocked off James Buchanan to stay unbeaten in the Mid-Penn Capital.

Emily Wissinger went 4-for-4, while Kris Root, Michele Oberholzer and Jade Dunhour each had two hits for the Blue Devils (8-1, 6-0).


Allison Holland struck out seven and added two hits at the plate for the Rockets (6-2, 4-2).

No. 9 Frederick 13 Smithsburg 3

SMITHSBURG - Kendall Blumenthal betled a three-run home run in the fifth inning to help Frederick roll past Smithsburg on Thursday.

Candace Stanford doubled twice and drove in a run to lead Smithsburg (2-5).

Williamsport 12, Clear Spring 0

CLEAR SPRING - Jessica Bennett pitched a two-hit shutout with eight strikeouts as Williamsport beat Clear Spring (1-7, 1-6) in the MVAL Antietam.

Courtney Hutchinson went 4-for-4 with a double and two RBI and Jessica Patey went 3-for-3 with three doubles and three RBI for the Wildcats (6-3, 5-2). Bennett had two hits and drove in two and Heather Taylor also had two hits.

Tussey Mountain 4, So. Fulton 3

SAXTON, Pa. - Tussey Mountain scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to score a come-from-behind victory over Southern Fulton in a Sideling Hill League game.

Courtney Trainor allowed six hits and struck out five for the Indians (1-6, 1-4). Candace Bard and Kelly Elbin each had two hits.


No. 1 Chambersburg 12 Red Land 2

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Chambersburg hit three of its four home runs in the first two innings to build an 8-1 lead as the Trojans rolled past Red Land in the Mid-Penn Commonwealth.

Andrew Burke homered in the first inning, followed by Jared Olson and Josh Frye in the second. Frye added another bomb in the fourth.

Frye had three hits, Josh Truman added two hits and Olson finished with four RBI for the Trojans (7-1, 5-0). Tyler Riley struck out six in the complete-game win.

No. 2 Frederick 2 Westminster 0

FREDERICK, Md. - Wes Gross twirled a one-hitter as Frederick continued to get strong pitching in an MVAL Chesapeake victory over Westminster.

Gross struck out 11 and walked only one, and also aided in a two-run fifth inning with an RBI sacrifice fly after Cory Rhodes scored the first run for Frederick (10-0, 7-0) on a single by Billy Gross.

Wes Gross allowed only a fifth-inning single to Westminster on a ground single by Sean Blake.

No. 3 Jefferson 13 No. 4 Musselman 2

INWOOD, W.Va. - Josh Simons pitched a two-hitter with eight strikeouts and added two hits and two RBI at the plate as Jefferson knocked Musselman from the undefeated ranks.

Brian Collins had three hits, while Will Grantham, David Smith, Gage Levac and Brendan McGlaughlin each added two for the Cougars (12-3). Levac drove in three runs, while Grantham and McGlaughlin each knocked in two.

Kenny Remsberg led the Applemen (7-1) with two hits.

No. 6 Hedgesville 7 Bridgeport 2

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Hedgesville had only three hits, but Bridgeport, ranked fifth in West Virginia Class AAA, gave plenty of help to the Eagles.

In a four-run second inning, Hedgesville (11-6) benefited from three walks and two errors. Corey Chaney delivered a two-run single to highlight the inning.

The Eagles scored on an error in the fourth inning and Cody Seibert added a two-run single in the fifth.

Robert Ahalt picked up his fourth win in six decisions, striking out six and walking only two.

Cumberland Valley 12 No. 5 Waynesboro 8

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. - Waynesboro fell into an early 8-0 hole and watched rallies in the sixth and seventh innings fall short in a loss to Cumberland Valley.

Waynesboro (4-3) cut the deficit to 8-5 in the sixth behind an RBI double by Andrew Caron and a two-run single by Zach Helman, but surrendered four unearned runs in the bottom half of the inning.

The Indians came back in the seventh with a run-scoring double by Joe Minnich and a two-run double by Helman, but the rally came up short.

Helman finished with three hits and four RBI, while Caron had two hits and two RBI.

No. 8 Boonsboro 5, Smithsburg 1

SMITHSBURG - Branden Painter pitched a no-hitter with eight strikeouts to lead Boonsboro past Smithsburg in the MVAL Antietam.

Matt Byers, Matt Fortese and Cory Robinson each had two hits for the Warriors (8-2, 6-1). Robinson drove in two runs.

Catoctin 4, Brunswick 2

THURMONT, Md. - Danny Duranko pitched a two-hitter and added two hits at the plate as Catoctin edged Brunswick (5-5, 3-3) in the MVAL Antietam.

Corey Myers' RBI double highlighted a three-run second inning for the Cougars (6-5, 4-3).

Walkersville 16, Tuscarora 11
