Three people injured in Chambersburg crash

April 15, 2005

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Three people were injured Thursday morning in a head-on collision in the 1700 block of Philadelphia Avenue, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Police said the accident occurred at 11:04 a.m. when a northbound car driven by Grant Gsell, 81, of Upper Strasburg, Pa., crossed into the southbound lane and collided with a car driven by Jeanne White, 70, of Shippensburg, Pa.

Franklin Fire Co. Deputy Chief Mark E. Trace said Gsell, White and White's passenger, Mary Mentzer, 67, of Shippensburg, all had to be cut out of the wreckage of the vehicles. Police said all three were taken to Chambersburg Hospital and then flown by Life Lion helicopter to York (Pa.) Hospital.

A York Hospital spokeswoman said Gsell and White were both in satisfactory condition, but no information was available on Mentzer. A Chambersburg Hospital spokeswoman said Mentzer was treated there and transferred to another hospital, but could not give out that information.

Trace said he did not believe any of the three had life-threatening injuries.

Charles Faison of Chambersburg told police he was driving behind White's car and saw Gsell's vehicle swerve to the east and then cut across the road. Faison said Gsell appeared to be asleep at the wheel just before impact, police said.

Police said all three were wearing their seat belts.
