Rate increase proposed

April 13, 2005|by GREGORY T. SIMMONS

Rates charged to customers of the Hagerstown Water and Sewer Department would rise under proposals discussed during Tuesday's City Council meeting.

The rates most affected would be those charged to customers who are outside city limits, city officials and consultants said. For instance, sewer service rates to noncity customers would increase by 13 percent, while the same rate to city customers would increase by 4 percent.

The rates discussed Tuesday were the result of a rate study commissioned by the city. The city has not revised its rate structure since the early 1990s.

The rate study also was central to a challenge brought by Washington County officials, who called for a rate study.

The council will hear further rate change proposals as part of upcoming budget discussions.
