Mail call

April 13, 2005

"I just wanted to call in and respond to the person who called in about a prayer for the pope. We didn't pray for the pope to get better, we prayed also that God would send us a new pope just as good as the one that we just lost."

- Hagerstown

"City and county officials are starting to make me very angry. This ice rink activity is subsidized with my tax money. I have a right to understand and know what is going on when they get rid of people, especially under the conditions that they did with these coaches. Something is going on here that needs to be brought out. There shouldn't be anything to hush this up. That is taxpayers' money. That should be public information, not personal."

- Hagerstown

"I just wanted to thank whoever found my husband's check at the Shell station and I wanted to thank the people at the Shell station who called my home and left a message that they had found the check."

- Martinsburg, W.Va.

"I've seen you praise these people coming back from Iraq. How about us poor people from Vietnam, you don't think anything about us."

- Washington County

"How dare anybody create a bumper sticker that says 'You Can't Be Both Christian and Pro-Abortion.' I'm looking at the back of a West Virginia veteran's automobile and it's a bumper sticker that says exactly what I just stated. How dare anybody tell me what I can and cannot be."

"Let's see if Sen. Robert Byrd can do anything about the price of gas."

- McConnellsburg, Pa.

"The reason a person should 'dress up' is out of respect for himself and the occasion. Be it religious, school related, or just being out in public with other people. It is not what one wears but it's how you present yourself."

- Hagerstown

"I live in Williamsport. I'm a senior citizen, 90 years old, and I would like to know where I can get a schedule for a baseball game for our team. The team I mean is the Orioles. I missed the first game and I happened to turn on the game the next day and they lost."

- Williamsport

"Relative to the North High stadium to be built entirely by private funds. Now they are asking the county for money through the Board of Education budget and are also asking the city to pony up. What happened? Is anyone surprised by this?"

- Hagerstown

"I've got my icicle lights up, the woman down the street has hers up, my next-door neighbors have theirs up. The reason why I have mine up is because I don't have a porch light.. Is this all people have to do is ride around and complain about the lights being up? I don't consider the icicle lights to be Christmas lights. We do take them down when it's the Fourth of July or Halloween and we put all the lights up and we take them down and then we put our icicle lights back up. Is this anybody else's business except mine?"

- Williamsport

"To the Mail Caller who thinks we should always remember 9/11. It's over and done. It was something that we can't do anything about now. Our war against two other nations didn't make it right. If we should have gone to war, it should have been against the country where these people come from and that was Saudi Arabia but that was Bush's favorite friends."

- Washington County

"I too am getting enough of the church thing with the people and how they dress. You should dress the best that you can because you are there in God's house and I don't think you should wear cut-off shorts at the communion table and things like that, that I have observed in Hagerstown churches. It doesn't have to be elaborate or expensive. It can be a clean, nice outfit but to show up at the communion table in shorts is very, very disrespectful to God."

- Washington County

"This is in response to the caller who said do we really want to let them forget what they did to us on 9/11. The Iraqis did nothing on 9/11. Everybody on those planes was Saudi Arabian. It was funded by Saudi Arabia. It was no way, shape or form in anyway associated with Iraq. It's a shame the media has let the Bush administration lie to the American public when the true culprits where the Saudis who lived with an iron fist, chopped people's arms off for stealing, do not allow women to vote, do not allow women to expose their faces in public, and do not allow women to use the same entrances in and out of their homes that men are allowed to use."

"We are always hollering about bashing Bush, but what do you think of a person who cuts the veterans' medical pay even when the governors put him down for it? That's getting pretty low, don't you think? He's such a great president. (I don't believe so)"

- Sharpsburg

"Why are people in Hagerstown so bitter, angry and hateful? We should all wake up each day with a smile and give thanks. Cherish each day God gives you. Your life could end in a heartbeat. It happens everyday. Enjoy life while you can."

"Why wasn't something in the paper about the blackout that happened in Boonsboro a few nights ago?"

- Boonsboro

"I would like to congratulate the North Hagerstown High School tennis team for doing so well in all their matches."

- Hagerstown

"It sickens me to see American flags lowered for a religious figure. The pope lived in palaces, dressed in silk, covered in gold while many lived on less than $1 a day and millions died from AIDS. I don't like to see the American flag lowered for him."

- Sharpsburg
