Mail Call

April 12, 2005

"I would like to know why the Maryland State Highway guys aren't out here cleaning up the debris and the trees on the side of the road on the National Pike up here in Hancock on I-68 and I-70? It's beautiful and now is the time to get this road cleaned. Come on, you guys, let's make Maryland beautiful."

- Washington County

"What is a poor person supposed to do? We went to town this morning and gas was $2.19. We came home this afternoon after lunch and it's $2.23. I guess we'll just have to stay home."

- Washington County

"I'm calling in reference to a response where someone said that the economy is booming and that we should go back and blame Clinton for the jobs that were shipped overseas. You know, there is blame to go around but someone would have to be almost blind to think the jobs that are being created are enough to let a family support itself on one income. Look at the real facts and see the kind of jobs that are being created. We are creating more jobs over in China than we are in our own country and I think that is criminal."

"I say no to changing a portion of Memorial Boulevard to Willie Mays Way. Respect our veterans. Also, as far as this emergency service fee, I say no on that. If they do impose this fee, I will no longer donate when they send out their annual fund drive. Where does all the money go that they get from bingo, tip jars and donations? Tell me."

- Washington County

"I'm just reading Mail Call and someone wrote in bragging about the war that President Bush has caused and the last thing it says is 'if Iran or North Korea wants to fight, I say bring them on.' Whoever that person is must not have anyone who would go in the service. Fifteen hundred Americans killed already in Iraq and for what? For heaven's sake, people, don't start another war that we don't need. We have lost too many good American citizens already over nothing."

- Hagerstown

"Once again, I challenge any reader out there, anybody, to call in to Mail Call and give me one reason to justify changing Memorial Boulevard to Willie Mays Way. What did Willie Mays do for the City of Hagers-town? He did nothing other than play a baseball game. What did he do for the town? I bet there will be no calls."

"I noticed on the news last night where Washington, D.C., wants to put a tax on commuters for people traveling in and out of their city. I think we need that in Maryland. We could make more money."

"Let's see how long Terri Schiavo's husband waits before there is a book deal in the making. There is money to be made off of the death of Terri Schiavo. Let's see how long the husband waits."

"I didn't realize that when the people of the state of Maryland went to the polls to vote for governor that we elected Mike Busch and Mike Miller to run the state of Maryland."

- Boonsboro

"I would just like to say there is only one Holy Father and He is God Almighty. You can talk to Him at any time. He is always on his throne."

- Hagerstown

"I live at the Alexander House and I can't get a cab because someone took the sign down. Come on, you people, put the sign back. I want my sign back and I want my cabs close."

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling in reference to the person complaining about the fire tax. You know it's terrible when our community or state would rather pay millions of dollars to football and basketball players than to take care of our teachers and those who provide a public service. I just want you guys to stop complaining and do something to help out."

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling about the bulldozers and the trailer that have been sitting on Broadway. Our parking is already limited and here this trailer has been sitting out here for two days and no one has even started anything yet. Even two spaces is enough for us to notice. I mean, every space is filled at the end of the night when everybody gets home. Where do they think we are going to park? They can come move it, for all I care."

"Remember, Democrats, if you are against this administration going to war in Iraq then you are with the terrorists. Remember, Democrats, that only the Republicans are churchgoing people. Remember, Democrats, you have no right to voice your opinion unless yours agrees with this administration. You are an American. This is America where wars were fought for freedom of speech. This is not World War II Nazi Germany."

- Clear Spring

"To the person who lost their Jack Russell/Chihuahua mix, please tell me that you have thought to call the Humane Society at 301-733-2060 and asked for the lost and found department. I know there is a dog of that mix there right now but I don't think it's a black one, but you may want to check if you haven't already."
